Linaro Releases

Linaro releases on a time based cycle. Every month, Linaro produces versions of its binary platform images, component sources, board support packages and infrastructure/validation tools to ensure that Linaro output can be consumed most easily by ARM development community, product builders and enthusiasts.

This monthly release model ensures that ARM developers can always access the latest and greatest output from Linaro engineering units, both in source form as well as nicely integrated in the form of binary distribution images. Linaro believes that this new model serves Linaro, its direct stakeholders and community much better and that this model will also be key to ensure that Linaro technlogy can flow to real market products early and often.

Release day is most always the last Thursday of the month at 16:00 UTC. This rule might change for cases where the last Thursday is a public holiday or in heavy holiday seasons or during a major Linaro Conference or sprint. The exact dates are documented above.

The release schedule of Linaro components could follow three different models:

  • Linaro Release Day: release and respin model, release day is always the last Thursday of each month at 16:00 UTC.

  • freeze and release model, freeze day is one week before Linaro release day and release as part of Linaro release. The Kernel WG is using this model.
  • toolchain WG model, release day is two weeks before Linaro release day.

This flexibility in the release model of the components is an attempt to resolve dependency between the artefacts delivered by each Working Groups (e.g. Toolchain delivery before Kernel allows to use the latest GCC to build linux-linaro).

Linaro Platform Images

Linaro Engineering Builds (LEB)

Linaro Engineering Builds (LEB) are pre-integrated and validated binary images for popular distribution clones.

LEBs come with Linaro optimizations from component release pre-integrated and hence give product builders and innovators early access to Linaro Technology as well as to production quality hardware enablement for modern ARM Boards with Linaro Member SoCs. LEBs are only released for carefully selected set of modern Low Cost Development Boards that meet high quality, enablement and freshness criteria, but on the hardware as well software side

LEBs are currently produced for two popular ARM/Linux distributions: Android and Ubuntu.

Android

Android provides a full software stack for mobile phones and other devices. For more information on Android please see the Android web site. Linaro provides an engineering build of the Android platform for validation and integration testing. These images can be downloaded from:

OpenEmbedded

OpenEmbedded provides a buildsystem and metadata repository for cross-compiling software. For more information on OpenEmbedded please see the OpenEmbedded web site. Linaro provides an engineering build of the OpenEmbedded platform for validation and integration testing. See https://wiki.linaro.org/Platform/BuildsAndBaselines for more information.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu provides a full and modern desktop experience. For more information on Ubuntu please see the Ubuntu web site. Linaro provides an engineering build of Ubuntu Core for validation and integration testing. These images can be downloaded from:
